Group mentor coaching can be a cost-effective, interactive and efficient way to prepare for your coaching credential. Here are some tips to decide if it is the right choice for you.
If you are working on ICF credentials, you will know that mentor coaching is an important part of the process, but where does it fit in?
First, here is a quick refresher on the ICF mentor coaching requirement:
Who Needs Mentor Coaching?
Mentor coaching is a part of the credential application process if you are:
- applying for an ACC or PCC credential after participating in an ICF accredited ACSTH training program
- applying for an ACC or PCC credential after participating in coach training that is not accredited by the ICF
- renewing an ACC credential
- applying for an MCC credential
How Many Hours of Mentor Coaching Are Required?
If mentor coaching is needed for your credential application, you will need ten hours of live mentoring with a qualified mentor coach. These hours must take place over more than ninety days.
Who Can Act as a Mentor Coach?
Your choice of mentor coach is entirely up to you. However, your mentor coach must hold an ICF credential in good standing. The credential must be at, or above the ICF credential for which you are applying.
Be sure to do your due diligence when choosing a mentor coach.
Has the mentor coach received mentor coach training? Will the mentor coach provide references or testimonials from satisfied mentor coaching clients? Is the mentor coach on the ICF Mentor Coach Registry? Is the mentor coach aware of, and willing to comply with the ICF Mentor Coaching Duties and Competencies?
What is Group Mentor Coaching?
The International Coaching Federation allows that seven of the ten required mentor coaching hours may be completed in group sessions. Whether online or in-person, these sessions must be attended live to qualify for mentor coaching credit. Coaches generally choose group mentor coaching for its cost-effectiveness, and for the opportunity to network with other coaches.
