As coaches, people tell us their stories, hoping that we can help them get unstuck. This tool by David Drake, founder of Narrative Coaching, shows you how to avoid the pitfalls that keep your clients stuck.
We coaches listen for a living. A lot. It’s the core of what we do in this helping profession. We know that our client’s stories hold the clues that will lead them to transformative change.
And so, we listen.
We reflect back what we are hearing, we hold the space for our clients to share their experiences with a goal toward moving them forward. It’s called narrative coaching.
In an earlier post I shared an interview with Andrew Scott, author of Shifting Stories. It’s one of my favourite reads on the power of stories to shift people’s thinking and it’s a book that I refer to often.
When it comes to the topic of narrative coaching though, there is one name that pops up over and over again in coach education. It’s David Drake, PhD, author of Narrative Coaching – The Definitive Guide to Bringing New Stories to Life.
I have been a fan of David Drake’s work since my earliest days in coaching.
Narrative Coaching method is unique in that it is organized around the change process not a coaching structure. Narrative coaching is a semi-structured process in which you can use people’s own stories to help them move through transitions and bring about desired changes.
This month, in partnership with WBECS, David will be launching his signature training program Narrative Coach. It’s a deep dive into the process that has helped thousands of people make profound changes in their lives. I’m super-excited to be taking part.
In the meantime, I’m posting an excellent coaching tool by David that is extremely effective in helping coaches avoid the pitfalls that keep our client’s stuck. Is that even possible? Yes, in fact it is. Hint: It has something to do with our ‘professional agility’.

As coaches, we regularly help our clients to navigate the complexities of their lives, their work, and their careers. We help
them make new connections between their past, present and future in order to achieve what is important to them. To do
so, we increasingly find ourselves needing to work across a number of professional boundaries, modalities and
stakeholders in order to support our practice and our clients.
