Transform Your Coaching Sessions

change your coaching session and ask the right questionsHave you ever felt stuck in your coaching sessions, wondering how to ignite a spark of growth and action in your clients?

You’re not alone.

Many coaches face the challenge of asking the right questions that lead to meaningful breakthroughs. You might want to try a few unconventional coaching questions that can transform your sessions and drive both you and your clients towards success.

I’ve spent countless hours listening to coaching sessions, and I’ve learned that the right question can change everything.

Here are some of my favourite unconventional questions to inspire growth:

What would you do if you weren’t afraid?

This question cuts straight to the heart of limiting beliefs. Fear often holds us back from pursuing what we truly want or even considering possibilities beyond our current reality. By asking this, you help the client identify their fears, name them, and visualize a version of themselves that is free of those constraints. It shifts them from a mindset of limitation to one of possibility, which is the first step toward breakthrough thinking.

If you could change one thing in your life right now, what would it be?

This question helps clients zero in on what’s most important and immediate. Often, clients come to coaching with a laundry list of things they want to change, but this question forces them to prioritize, reminding them that they don’t need to solve everything at once. It’s a way to get them to focus on the one area that could bring the most significant impact or relief in the present moment, allowing them to take action more easily and confidently.

What does success look like for you in this situation?

Many clients struggle because they don’t have a clear vision of what success actually means to them. Success can look different for everyone, and it’s often a moving target. By asking them to define success, you help your client clarify their own goals and set measurable, tangible outcomes. This removes ambiguity and gives them a concrete goal to work toward, which drives motivation and a sense of accomplishment when they take steps toward it.

These questions are just the beginning. They can open doors to deeper conversations and insights, paving the way for personal and professional growth.

Using These Questions for Your Own Growth

As coaches, we’re always focused on helping our clients, but we too are constantly growing and evolving. These questions aren’t just for clients. They’re powerful tools for our own self-reflection and development as well. Ask yourself:

What would I do if I wasn’t afraid?

As a coach, fear might show up in different ways: fear of not being good enough, fear of failure, or even fear of taking risks in our own personal or professional growth. When we ask ourselves this question, we challenge ourselves to break free from those fears and stretch our boundaries. This can lead to new learning experiences, taking on bigger challenges, or making bold decisions in our coaching practices.

If I could change one thing in my life right now, what would it be?

Coaches can get caught up in helping others achieve their goals while neglecting their own. This question serves as a reminder to check in with ourselves and identify areas where we can improve or focus on personal growth. It’s a great way to re-align with our own values, reset priorities, and take actionable steps to make sure we’re living authentically and not just “coaching” others through change.

What does success look like for me in this situation?

As a coach, we’re often measuring success by the progress our clients make. But it’s equally important to define success for ourselves. This question helps us clarify what we truly want in our careers, relationships, and personal development. Whether it’s in our coaching practice or our own personal goals, defining success ensures that we’re not just following the path but intentionally designing our own journey and recognizing our own milestones along the way.

By using these questions regularly, we nurture our own growth as coaches and stay engaged with the process of self-improvement.

After all, the more we grow, the more we can serve our clients in profound ways.
